Here you can see the group and I recording the fire crackling sound effect and I was the one who was producing the sound. The way I done this was by getting a plastic water bottle which was empty and essentially just experimenting with different objects until we found one which was sufficient and sounded the most like crackling fire. We ended up coming to the water bottle so I start to scrunch up the water bottle very slowly which gave it that slow burning crackling fire effect that I wanted.
As you can also see we recorded this scene through the voice recorder because we though it was the best device at the time to pick up the sound and also the place where the sound was recorded was done in a room with a green screen and the room was enclosed. I recorded the sound with the door closed because there was noise in the other room plus with the door shut it gave the recording a soundproof feel to it. So after listening to the playback of this effect you will notice how clear the recording is.
Personally I feel as if the strengths of the voice recorder would be that it is portable and compact and also it is very easy to use as it has a play/stop button which is simple for users to follow.
A weakness for using the voice recorder would simply be that the quality would not be crystal clear as the microphone itself is not the best and the sound may be slightly muffled.
In terms of the technique I just place the bottle where the microphone area of the voice recorder was placed for maximum sound.
It took us numerous attempts with different objects to try and recreate the sound of rainfall on gravel until we came to the briefcase and pencils. This technique was the one we decided to go with and also the device used to record this was again the voice recorder because it was compact and portable which was good for us because it meant we could take it anywhere we want.
Despite how ideal the voice recorder was there was still times that we tried to record the sound effects and the playback was muffled and not as clear which did mean we had to try and redo this recording however overall the voice recorder was decent.
This is the desktop microphone which was used when we were recording the fire crackling sound effect. I came up with the idea to scrunch the bottle up because it gave it that crackling effect like the one we were trying to recreate with the fire.
I also recorded with the desktop microphone which we felt was also necessary because it was known for having good quality of sound.
The good thing about the desktop microphone was that it connects to the iMac with an application called garage band which was really simple and easy to use. Also the quality was much better then the voice recorder and when we played the recording back it was clearer and had a better quality of sound.
The weakness of using the desktop microphone was that we had to stay in one place to use it and it was wired meaning we couldn't unplug it and take anywhere except to another iMac. Apart from that it was good.
