Programme analysis unit 14

Image result for radio 4 drama homefront

This radio drama is called Home front  and this is about a group of people who try to survive and live a normal life whilst dealing with the first world war.  The scheduling time for this radio drama would have been from November the 1st until the 10th November 2018. This includes the date  and also the length of the radio  drama would be an hour and 12 minutes long. The audience for this radio drama would be aimed more towards the elder generation so for instance those who are 30 and above especially old aged people as they have have been bought up around the war era so watching people escape and try to live life whilst the war is going on could bring back memories for these people and they would want to listen in because of this. The audience can access this via radio and it is also available via digital application by downloading the BBC sound app.

The overall structure of the programme is that it is a radio drama which was played every few days in November of last year. The purpose of this radio drama is to inform and educate people of what life was like for British citizens back when the war was going on and how people struggled in life to survive and cope. The radio drama talks about how people want to leave their area as they are scared and at risk of getting attacked.

For instance we see at 3:45 of the first episode of season one , one of the main characters can be heard saying " It doesn't feel right to stay here". Also we hear the this person talking about how he wants to move somewhere relatively far such as Germany as he does not want his family harmed. This person then bumps into another civilian who asks for help to get out the country as well as she has a baby and does not want to be associated with the area they are in as it poses a threat to her and her babies life. This informs us that the area of Britain where many people lived in the time of war was not very pleasant and people were very conscious of how their life would turn out if they got caught up with the war.

Also at 11:39 we here the women's dad say " we are about to go to war with Germany" and by the tone of his voice we can tell that the man is implying that he does not want his daughter mixing with German as the daughter had a boyfriend who was German. This educates the audience as it allows for them to understand that the relationship between British and German citizens was very dangerous at the time of war as the two may potentially had to fight one another. The audience see this and realise how risky it is to be in a relationship at this point in time.

The running order of this radio drama would be that there is dialogue and dramatisations happening as there are actors which shows their is dialogue and also there are dramatisations which are basically reenactments of scenes and these scenes would have been those which tried to show how people lived back in the day when the war was taken place in Britain. So essentially this is what running order is is the order in which certain stuff occurs in the radio drama.

There are many meanings created in the programme for instance dramatisations are made to give an example to the audience which informs them about how people acted  back when the Germans and British were having conflicts between each other and were about to go to war. There are many meanings created in this radio drama and they are things like sound and these types of sounds can be broken down into categories from diegetic and non diegetic sound. Both of these types of sound are in the radio drama because diegetic sound is factors such as the voice of the actors which also falls under dialogue. These are types of sound which can be hear in the shot.

We then move on to non diegetic sound which are factors such as atmospheric sounds and sound effects which are made to emphasise the meaning of the scene and at alot more meaning to a scene. The reason non diegetic sounds are so powerful is because of just how easily detected they are and how they are picked up in scenes. For instance in a war movie a siren or bell may ring which will be significantly loud and is a sound effect. The loudness conveys meaning for the audience which helps to understand what is going on.

Putting this into context of Homefront we can hear voice overs of the British public shouting and making fun of a German who is in Britain. This is because both Britain and Germany were potentially going to war so when a bunch of British citizens saw a German man walking around in Britain they decided to start mocking him and with voiceovers of all people shouting and yelling we can hear this and it stands out to us as to whats happening in the radio drama.

Essentially what sound effects are is they are a sound other than speech or music made artificially for use in a play, film, or other broadcast production.

The mode of address is not direct as no one is speaking to the audience technically however there are actors who are demonstrating what happened in the olden times when war was actually taking place and we see this mode of address and it is not direct when the man talks to the lady about wanting to move to Germany for a peaceful like and how he is a danger right now being in Britain. There is only dialogue which is being exchanged by both actors to each other no one is directly speaking to the audience except the narrator.

The mode of address is how the text speaks to the audience and how it involves them. It also refers to how the text influences the audience. This radio drama informs and educates us about what life was like back when the war was taking place and how people had to struggle to survive especially those who were German and lived in England as the war between the two took place.

Those who were involved in this programme are the actors who are Tom Stuart, Charlie clements and Amelia lowdell. They were the voice actors of the people who were residents who were caught up in the war in the early 19 hundreds. These actors spent most of the time in the studio to rehearse certain lines and overall this is how the cast prepared for the radio drama. Also some of the voice actors who participated in the development of homefront had more then  one role and some of these actors played a few different characters.
